Skin Prick Testing

Skin prick tests are used to identify your allergies. Advantages include its relative sensitivity and specificity, rapid results, low cost, and the clear demonstration to patients of their allergies.

Skin pricks are normally carried out by our doctors. Your arm will be marked with identifying numbers, upon which minor samples of allergens, such as pollen, dust, etc, are placed. These are applied with a lancet, a slight pin prick, which allows the allergen to place itself just under the top layer of the skin. If you are allergic to any of the allergens used, your skin will most likely react within 10-15 minutes of application. The reaction area will normally cause minor redness or itchiness. This area will then be measured, and soothing cream applied. Based on these results, we are then able to determine a plan of action against your allergies.

Immunotherapy

Also known as desensitisation therapy or “allergy vaccine”, immunotherapy treats an illness by activating the patient’s immune system in order to achieve desensitisation. Immunotherapy can be administered under the skin (subcutaneous) or under the tongue (sublingual). Immunotherapy is used to identify and treat a wide variety of allergies, including symptom relief for patients with hay fever or allergic asthma.

This type of treatment involves administering substances such as pollens, mould spores, dust mites, or other elements which have been found to produce allergic reactions in the patient. It aims to reduce production of allergy-associated antibodies, moderating the release of histamine, and stimulates the production of blocking antibodies.
